Subject: MEMO: Notes from orientation
Dear M.S. full-time students:
It was great to see meet many of you during today’s activities and I look forward to getting to know all of you in the weeks and months ahead.
Some quick notes and reminders:
* SOLEDAD O’BRIEN: If your family and friends are curious about what Ms. O’Brien had to say today, they can catch 30 minutes of her talk via the video here, on the DOS Blog: http://bit.ly/ue038 (and see a new tech service at work).
* FEEDBACK: Thank you for the feedback some of you provided about today, the entire admissions-to-student process and the webcasts and other communications. Keep those comments coming, please.
* GROUP PHOTO: We know 3-4 sections missed the class photo, but we had melting gelato waiting. Not to worry, we will try to take another group shot at the BBQ on Friday, Sept. 4.
* SELF-GUIDED CAMPUS TOUR: If you haven’t done it yet, please use the scavenger hunt map from the international student orientation to create your own self-guided campus tour: http://deanstudents.blogsome.com/2009/08/11/667/
* TECH JAM SESSIONS: At various times in August and in the Fall and Spring, we’ll be hosting informal workshops (one hour or less) to go over specific tech skill sets. Examples: Google Calendar; smarter use of e-mail; Google Docs and other web-based collaboration tools; Twitter tips; (topics welcome). Watch for more info on these soon.
* MEDIA ENTREPRENEURSHIP GROUP: After an immensely successful set of “Lerer Lessons” in 2008-09, Ken Lerer, the chairman and co-founder of the Huffington Post, will be returning to the school this Fall to lead workshops on starting a media business. These sessions are open to the entire school community and will take place on the following six Tuesdays from 4:30-6 pm: 9/22; 10/13; 10/27; 11/10; 11/17; 12/1. Details coming soon (the only requirement is that if you sign up, you attend all six sessions). Meanwhile, watch Lerer deliver last year’s Hearst New Media Lecture about the news business: “How We Got Here and How We Get Out of Here”:

* CONNECTING ON SOCIAL MEDIA SITES: If you are going to connect with faculty, staff or classmates on services such as Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter, please take a moment to put in a personalized comment indicating you are current student. Otherwise, faculty and others might ignore your connection requests.
* CONNECTING THE OLD-FASHIONED WAY: The Sreenivasan/Huff offices - located to your right, past the staircase, as you enter the Stabile Student Center - are always open to you. You can stop by and see us - or make an appointment by e-mailing mgh2@columbia.edu or ss221[at]columbia.edu (or write to us both at dos[at]jrn.columbia.edu - this is the best way to make sure you get a fast answer).
